6 PM | Film Screening: The Gospel According to Andre’

André Leon Talley has been a fixture in the world of fashion for so long that it’s difficult to imagine a time when he wasn’t defining the boundaries of great style. Kate Novack’s intimate portrait, The Gospel According to André takes viewers on an emotional journey from André’s roots growing up in the segregated Jim Crow South to become one of the most influential tastemakers and fashion curators of our times.

Novack’s film draws fascinating, heretofore unexplored connections, between the elegance of André’s beloved grandmother and the Black Church of his youth and his later iconic, barrier-breaking work at publications like Women’s Wear Dailyand Vogue. Weaving together a wealth of archival footage from the most glamorous moments in fashion history with André’s poignant reflections on his life and career, The Gospel According to André is a cinematic monument to one of the most unique figures of 20th Century American culture.

Produced by the team who brought viewers The First Monday in May and Page One: Inside The New York Times and featuring commentary from fashion luminaries including Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford, The Gospel According to André is an indispensable addition to the growing canon of fashion documentary.

Learning Lab: Women & PrEP

4PM | Women & PrEP Learning Lab

African-American women are more likely to be infected with HIV than other women, and many don't know it. So public health officials and advocates are trying to get the word out about PrEP, pre-exposure prophylaxis. It's a daily medication that helps prevent HIV infection.

"Women simply don't know the drug exists," Blout said. "When they eventually do find out about it, they're angry at their doctors for not telling them about it. It's really about giving women the agency to protect their health."

One of the challenges in getting women educated about PrEP is that primary care providers such as OB-GYNs often aren't aware of it. That problem is compounded with low-income patients who don't always get regular doctor visits and preventive care.

The medication, which is sold under the brand name Truvada, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2012 to prevent HIV infection. Research conducted in Africa, where HIV transmission in heterosexual couples is common, found that it is effective in preventing HIV infection when one partner is HIV positive. If the daily pill is taken consistently, it can reduce the risk of HIV infection by up to 92 percent.

Find out More Information about PrEP for black women here.

A Brunch of Creatives

A Brunch of Creatives

Magic City Fashion Week cordially invites you and a guest to an open dialogue about the problems that we as creatives face here in Birmingham and how we begin to uproot those. Let's come together and discuss how we, as a creative community, can come together to move the city forward.

Brunch will be provided and complimentary wine from our sponsor Corbin Farms Winery will be served.

Read an excerpt from our open letter below and the full version here

"This is a call to action. A plea to the City of Birmingham and the communities that form it to support our artists. No longer can we as creatives stand idly by, watching as our city grows in every way imaginable except in the realm of art, specifically fashion. We believe that there exists a misconception that fashion is merely self-serving. We also understand that some may say or feel that we have more important things to worry about. To those notions we submit Magic City Fashion Week, an organization founded in 2017 with the specific purpose of utilizing the platform that fashion presents to spread messaging and awareness about issues that affect our community, but often go under the radar. Issues like the increasing rate of HIV transmission that ranked Jefferson county 12th in the nation in 2016 for new cases of infection. No longer should the creative voice be dismissed as simply being for entertainment. We submit that it is a viable means of not only addressing tough issues, but stimulating local economies and building a sense of community. Fashion is a connector of people, industries, and commerce; But at the end of the day, we as the individuals who work to produce it, are artists who need the support and recognition of the community and city that we serve."

Stigma is So Last Season: The Discussion

  • The Worship Center Christian Church (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The "Stigma is So Last Season," Panel discussion is a forum on HIV and how stigma negatively affects the community, specifically communities of color. Knowledge about HIV prevention, transmission and care can offset the stigma that is caused by misinformation. As we know, People living with HIV are not only stigmatized by others but they also stigmatize themselves due to perceived stigma or experience of discrimination, which have serious consequences, such as low self esteem, depression, self isolation, and eventually low motivation to seek proper treatment. It is the goal of this discussion to touch on each of these areas and offer a call to action to the community.

This discussion is Free of charge and geared toward ages 12 and up.
